Guruvayur Festival

Guruvayur temple is described to be a shrine of 'Nithyotsava'. So varied and elaborate are the daily routine here.'Guruvayurappan' (Srikrishnan) is the deity here. Several important offerings are here as, Nirmalya darsan Vakacharthu, Poojas, Seevelis, Deeparadhana, Thrippuka, etc. While most of the other Kerala temples will have Seeveli with elephant only during annual festival, here it is a daily feature and on festival days this will be a more elephant, with all the lamps on the 'Vilakkumadam' lighted for the night Seeveli. The annual utsava at Guruvayur temple is the reinforcement of the divine chaithanya. Utsava enables devotees to get together at least once a year. In Kerala, also there are many other festivals in different shrines, Pooram (Vadakkum Nathan temple, Thrissur) Arattu (Sripadmanabha temple Thriruvananthapuram) Makaravilakkau (Sabarimala sri Ayyappan temple) Besides Christmas, Easter and Malayattur perunnal Christians in Kerala have two other important festivals such as Edathua perunnal And Festival of Korattimuthi. Christian festivals Malayattur perunal St. Thomas, one of the twelve Disciples of Christ, came to kerala (kodungallur) in 52A.D. He is believed to have offered penance at malayattur, on the banks of the Periyar River. At this very site, stands a church. Every year on the Sunday, which falls after Easter thousands of pilgrims young and old, men and women, visit the church, which is situated well within the jungles of the western gnats. This is one of the most colourful Christian festivals in kerala. The processions taken out from this church on festival days are mammoth ones and thousands of devotees participate in them. Almost all varieties of percussion instruments are played during these processions.
