Bharathanatyam

Barathanatyam is poetry in motion, tracing its hoary origins in the natyasastra, written by the great sage Bharatha, a highly traditional and stylized dance form, crystallized by Bharatha's techniques. Earlier known as 'Dasiattam' and 'sadir, was practiced by the devadasis of the South Indian temples, took to disrepute due to economic and social conditions, in modern times, Rukmini Devi gave it new life and respectability.

The Bhartanatyam is a combination of 'Aralippu' (invocation) 'Jathiswaram' (note combinations) 'Shabdam' (notes and lyrics)'Varnam' (a combination of pure dance and abhinaya) light items like 'padams' and

'Javalis' (all erotic) and finally the ''Thillana"(pure dance). Even though Bharathanatyam is not kerala's own dance form, this unique dance is highly venerated and practiced.
